Invitation for the New Year’s cutting of the traditional pie of the H.S.S.

The New Year’s celebration with the cutting of the traditional pie of the H.S.S, will take place on Sunday January 31ts, 2010 at Amomon Cave (also called Davelis Cave).  The access is relatively easy. We are waiting you all.

NEW LIGHT SHED ON MYTHICAL LABYRINTH

A joint Oxford University and Hellenic Speleological Society Expedition today launched their project website, a short film and preliminary findings into an investigation of the competing claims to the location of the mythical Cretan Labyrinth.  The expedition was funded and supported by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), The Oxford University Expeditions Council and Christ Church College, Oxford.

During the first two weeks of August a caving expedition took place to the South-West side of Psiloritis Mountain in Amari area, Rethimno prefecture, in Crete.

The expedition was organized by Paul Kaddas and Thomas Lamprakopoulos, Stefanos Papapolimerou and Theologos Tsalikoglou participated.

Also for three days Konstantina Aretaki and Babis Skepentzakis from the Dept. of West Crete of the H.S.S. joined the expedition, during which the following caves and pits were explored:

A journey to the further east part of Crete to trace and watch the water ecosystem, a precious and often  pillaged natural resource, still resisting to human insanity.

100 Years Anniversary of the Organized Hungarian Speleology

On the basis of the success of the archaeological exploration in the Bukk Mountains in 1906 the Speleological Committee was set up by the Hungarian Geological Society on the 28th of January 1910.
The Hungarian Speleological Society as the successor of the Speleological Committee wishes to commemorate the occasion and also the important persons and exploration successes of the last 100 years by organizing an international conference.

Sinkhole of Kopaida: Field trip

Twenty two people, among them 17 members of the H.S.S. Seminar, visited on Sunday March 22nd, 2009 the Sinkhole of Kopaida, as a field trip of the Educational Program of Scientific and Athletic Speleology of the H.S.S.
The visit at the sinkhole was the second of a series of field trips. The first visit was at Mitropisi, a mine in Attica.

02/08/09: Today morning at 06:00’ the Cave Rescue Drill of the Hellenic Speleological Society was completed successfully. The Drill was the final step of the Cave Rescue School that took place in the H.S.S. for the last month.

Cave Rescue School: 2009

The CAVE RESCUE TEAM of the HELLENIC SPELEOLOGICAL SOCIETY organizes a SCHOOL ON CAVE RESCUE. The school’s duration will be 4 weeks, form January 12th until February 9th, 2009.

The school’s purpose is to train the participants on the basic principles and procedures of cave rescue. Both, theoretical presentation in classroom, as well as practice of the techniques on the field will be equally stressed out...

The school will be completed in 12 hours.
