F.S.E - Euro Speleo Forum (21-24 August 2014) Baille-Herculane Romania

he 9th Euro Speleo Forum took place in the idyllic, spa town of Baille-Hercilane in North-Western Romania from the 21st – 24th of August 2014. The town dates back to Neolethic times and has mythological connections to Hercules. Two hundred speleologists from twenty countries within Europe attended the gathering while there were two participations from as far away as Indonesia and Brazil.


The Administrative Council of the H.S.S and the Administrative Board of the Alistratis Cave, decided in a joint effort to honour the late Professor Nikolaos K.Simeonidis, Honorary President of the H.S.S. and Honorary citizen of the village of Alistratis. the event was held on Sunday the 23rd of June 2013 at 6:00 p.m with the organising of a large scale event at Alistratis Cave in the town of Serres in Northern Greece, in order for the organising committee to bestow his name to the cave. The same cave in which together with colleagues ( speleologists from the Hellenic Speleological Society and citizens of Alistratis) he essentially gave prominence to and drew national and international attention to it.


The beloved Nikolaos K.Simeonidis Professor of Geology and Paleontology at the University of Athens passed away on Tuesday the 30th of April 2013 . He served for years as President of the Administrative Council of the Hellenic Speleological Society and had been recently declared Honorary President of the H.S.S. Both the Greek and International scientific community grieve the loss of a brilliant scientist, member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and above all a great man

H.S.S. annual Event at Kapsia cave - Tripoli

On Sunday 22th of January 2012 at 12.30' the annual event of the Hellenic Speleological Society (H.S.S.) took place with great success for its members and friends, including cutting New Year's cake in Kapsia cave of Tripoli in Arkadia. The New Year’s celebration with the cutting of the traditional pie of the H.S.S, will take place on Sunday January 31ts, 2010 at Amomon Cave (also called Davelis Cave).  The access is relatively easy. We are waiting you all.

On the 6th of January 2010, The members of the H.S.S. Thomas LABRAKOPOULOS, Giannis SOTIRIS aassisted by Panagiotis SOTIRIS visited once more the pothole of Stavrokoraki. MEDIA RELEASE     15 October, 2009

A joint Oxford University and Hellenic Speleological Society Expedition today launched their project website, a short film and preliminary findings into an investigation of the competing claims to the location of the mythical Cretan Labyrinth.  The expedition was funded and supported by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), The Oxford University Expeditions Council and Christ Church College, Oxford. 


During the first two weeks of August a caving expedition took place to the South-West side of Psiloritis Mountain in Amari area, Rethimno prefecture, in Crete.

The expedition was organized by Paul Kaddas and Thomas Lamprakopoulos, Stefanos Papapolimerou and Theologos Tsalikoglou participated.

Also for three days Konstantina Aretaki and Babis Skepentzakis from the Dept. of West Crete of the H.S.S. joined the expedition, during which the following caves and pits were explored:

100 Years Anniversary of the Organized Hungarian Speleology

On the basis of the success of the archaeological exploration in the Bukk Mountains in 1906 the Speleological Committee was set up by the Hungarian Geological Society on the 28th of January 1910.
The Hungarian Speleological Society as the successor of the Speleological Committee wishes to commemorate the occasion and also the important persons and exploration successes of the last 100 years by organizing an international conference.


On January 13th, 2009, Giorgos AVTZIS and Nikos LELOUDAS members of the Hellenic Speleological Society (H.S.S.) together with the geologist – expert on volcanoes Giorgo VOUGIOUKALAKI, participated at the filming of a documentary for BBC 2: "HOW THE EARTH MAKES HISTORY".

Sinkhole of Kopaida: Field trip

Twenty two people, among them 17 members of the H.S.S. Seminar, visited on Sunday March 22nd, 2009 the Sinkhole of Kopaida, as a field trip of the Educational Program of Scientific and Athletic Speleology of the H.S.S.
The visit at the sinkhole was the second of a series of field trips. The first visit was at Mitropisi, a mine in Attica.


Italy is going to host the 4th EuroSpeleoForum titled «ICNUSSA 2009», at Urzulei Sardinia.

02/08/09: Today morning at 06:00’ the Cave Rescue Drill of the Hellenic Speleological Society was completed successfully. The Drill was the final step of the Cave Rescue School that took place in the H.S.S. for the last month.


Cave Rescue School: 2009

The CAVE RESCUE TEAM of the HELLENIC SPELEOLOGICAL SOCIETY organizes a SCHOOL ON CAVE RESCUE. The school’s duration will be 4 weeks, form January 12th until February 9th, 2009.

The school’s purpose is to train the participants on the basic principles and procedures of cave rescue. Both, theoretical presentation in classroom, as well as practice of the techniques on the field will be equally stressed out...


First Aid School

Like every year the H.S.S. organizes a  School on First Aid.

The school will be completed in 12 hours.

Lessons will be held in our offices at 32, Sina str., Athens on Tuesdays and Thursdays afternoons from 19:00’ – 22:00’. The dates of the school are December 9, 11, 16 & 18...
